Before your first session

  • A device matching the Android requirements.
  • GBA Play installed through its official distribution channel. Check official download availability for the current status.
  • A readable .gba game file you are legally entitled to use. ZIP and 7z archives cannot be imported directly.

GBA Play does not include commercial ROMs or a proprietary GBA BIOS. The website does not supply games. A save file or a patch cannot substitute for the base game file.

From a file to a session

  1. Choose Import ROM on Home

Use Android’s file picker to select your .gba file. You can also open Add Game from Library.

  2. Open the game in Library

After the import succeeds, tap its entry to reach the game page. Choose Start Game to boot it normally.

  3. Check the controls

Try the directions, A, B, and Start. For touch preferences, open Settings → Controls. For a physical pad, follow the controller setup guide.

  4. Return to the game page when finished

Use the game menu’s exit flow so the app can finish its normal save handling. Do not clear app storage as a way to exit.

Adding a whole folder? The game-import guide explains how that differs from copying one file into the app.

Make the first save deliberate

Use the game’s own save command when it offers one. Then open the game’s page and choose Manage under Saves & History. On the Saves page, check Current Progress. Simply opening a game does not mean it has written an in-game save.

Before a longer session, learn to export a .sav and create a backup. Snapshots and Timeline are useful ways to resume a moment, but they are different from an independent save copy.

If import or startup fails, go directly to Game not loading and use the message shown by the app.
